Prepare the Entrance Before Installing Bees

A 13mm entrance hole needs to be drilled into the base before the hive is used. Hornsby Beekeeping Supplies recommends fitting a short length of irrigation hose into the entrance opening to help prevent rainwater from travelling directly inside.

Choose the entrance position carefully before drilling. Once prepared, remove any loose timber or sharp edges and confirm that the opening remains clear.

Suitable Hive Placement

Position the wooden native bee hive on a stable support in a sheltered location. Gentle morning sunlight is generally preferable to harsh afternoon exposure. The complete hive should also be protected from flooding, persistent wind and direct roof runoff.
