Galvanised Migratory Lid Vent

Add durable ventilation openings to a DIY migratory hive lid with Galvanised Lid Vents from Hornsby Beekeeping Supplies.

This small component has a simple job: create controlled openings around the lid rim so air can move through the upper section of the hive.

Four vents are generally required to prepare one complete migratory lid.

Galvanised Construction

The vent is made from solid galvanised material, providing a robust alternative for beekeepers building or repairing traditional migratory lids.

Because the vent sits in an exposed part of the hive roof, durable construction matters.

It can be used when assembling a new lid or replacing a worn or damaged vent in otherwise serviceable equipment.

Why Vent a Migratory Lid?

Heat naturally rises inside the hive.

Vent openings around the upper section provide additional airflow and can support the colony as it regulates temperature during warmer weather.

Ventilation is only one part of the hive environment, however. Entrance size, bottom-board design, colony strength and local conditions all influence airflow.

The goal is controlled ventilation rather than creating large uncontrolled gaps.

Four Vents Per Lid

Hornsby Beekeeping Supplies recommends four of these vents for a standard migratory lid.

That allows ventilation to be distributed around the rim rather than concentrated in one point.

If you are building several lids at once, calculate the number of vents required before beginning the project so each lid can be completed in one workshop session.
