Traditional 10-Frame Beehive Base with Beetle Trap

Support your colony on a straightforward timber base that also provides a practical small hive beetle trapping area. This assembled 10-frame beehive base from Hornsby Beekeeping Supplies combines traditional hive construction with a pre-installed trap beneath the brood box.

The design is suitable for beekeepers who prefer a solid bottom board rather than an open mesh floor but still want an economical way to manage beetles that move into the lower section of the hive.

Three Materials, One Complete Base

The assembled base includes:

• Natural white cypress cleats
• A wax-dipped and painted riser
• A durable Weathertex base board
• A pre-installed small hive beetle trap

White cypress is used for the supporting cleats, while the treated riser forms the perimeter beneath the 10-frame box. The Weathertex board creates the solid floor of the hive.

Turn the Lower Cavity into a Trap

The pre-installed trap can be filled with either cooking oil or diatomaceous earth. Small hive beetles that enter the trap area are then retained below the colony.

Choose only one trapping medium and use it according to appropriate apiary practices. When using oil, avoid overfilling the tray or allowing liquid to spill around the hive stand. When using diatomaceous earth, minimise dust and avoid placing it where bees can contact it directly.

Inspect the trap regularly, especially during warm periods or when beetle activity is increasing. Remove accumulated insects and debris, clean the trapping area and refill it as needed.

Where a Solid Base Fits

A traditional solid base can be useful where beekeepers do not require the continuous airflow of a mesh bottom board. However, ventilation needs differ according to climate, colony strength and hive position.

Position the assembled base on a stable stand above damp ground. Check that the upper 10-frame box sits squarely on the riser and that the entrance remains clear.
